It's the season for hot cross buns, but not this hot.

Courtenay Fire Department was called out to Grains Bakery on 10th Street around 7:30 pm Monday.

Flames were spotted in an area where the chimney goes through the roof. Employees in the building at the time tried to extinguish the fire but had to quickly give up and get out. No one was hurt.

"When we got here crews found smoke coming out of the roof," Courtenay Fire deputy chief Kurt MacDonald told CHEK News. "Fire was located above one of the commercial ovens and we managed to get the fire contained to the area with minimal damage to the building."

The fire crews quickly had everything under control. Fortis was called in to shut off the natural gas.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined. There is no damage estimate at this point.
